Seminar: Case Study: brilliant idea, efficient implementation.

The aim of the seminar was to provide students with a unique history of the process of the unique invention and its implementation into operation. In the beginning the company's structure was shown, its potential and experience. Then the invention itself was discussed in detail – the UOZ-1 animal deterring device for railway lines. Attention was drown to the innovatory principles of its operation and the need for an interdisciplinary approach to the problem of animal-train collisions. On the one hand ethological aspects of the functioning of animals in the environment closely adjacent to the railway line, on the other – the technical conditions for long-term, reliable and safe operation of this type of equipment, and the third – the impact of the potential collisions of high-speed trains with large and heavy animals. The importance of multifaceted analysis skills of the problem and the need of interdisciplinary knowledge were stressed.

In the final part of the lecture examples of marketing activities based on market research were given, concerning to what direction should product development aim and the strategy of the manufacturer (technical development , new markets).

Seminar: Animal-train collisions and train traffic safety 

The aim of the seminar was to acquaint students with the problems of train collisions with animals as one of the sources of train traffic safety hazard. The speaker discussed in detail the reasons for the occurrence of this type of collisions, the mechanism of perception in the railway line by animals, as existing “since ever”, i.e. for more than 150 years, “non-threatening” environment, and statistical data showing the scale and effects of the phenomenon (the example: information obtained from the Regional Railways). Technical means and methods of limiting the scope of the phenomenon were presented. There shown and discussed mechanical barriers (fencing and construction of over- and underpassages for animals), acoustic (acoustic device for animal protection UOZ-1) and optical means of prevention (wildlife warning reflectors), outlining the advantages and disadvantages of each solution.

In summary it was emphasized that animal protection systems should be considered as one of the many technical solutions that have a significant impact on the safety of the train traffic. Modernisation of railway lines which allow the passage of trains with speeds of 160 km/h, the new construction of substructure damping noise and vibration and modern rolling stock, fast and quiet but less and less mechanically resistant to the effects of a collision with a large and heavy animal – this is grounds for serious consideration of the problem presented at the seminar.
